Licorice May Help Brain Cells and Delay Diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Here's another great reason to eat more licorice: It helps your brain! New research is indicating that a special compound in licorice root (from which real licorice is made) can help slow down the death of cells associated with diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other forms of dementia.

The compound is called liquiritigenin (or LQ), and it is being studied by Dr. Rosemarie Booze, the Bicentennial Chair Professor in Behaviorial Neuroscience at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Booze binds to a specific kind of estrogen receptor cell located in the brain.
